Sewing, Weight-Gain & Le Tote

August 26, 2016
This post is in partnership with Le Tote. They're like Netflix for clothes. Borrow clothes, wear them, try out new styles and return them. They do the laundering and help with styling and fit! Try it free for 14 days with this special link. melissaesplin-letote-sewing-1 I've talked about depression before. It's not a big deal when it's under control with lifestyle, diet and medication. But lately, I've been frustrated by one of the most common side effects of my medication: weight gain. It's like I have no self-control. All I want is sugar and carbs and I'm always hungry. In the last 2 months, I've gained nearly 5% of my body weight. It may not seem like much. And to be honest, it's not as big a deal as many other medications out there, but it's significant enough that I don't feel comfortable. I have a rather healthy body image, so I really don't mind what I see when I look in the mirror when I get out of the shower, but I don't feel like I belong in my own clothes. WEIGHT DOESN'T MATTER, but confidence does.  Over the last three months, Le Tote has "grown" with me. As I've fluctuated, I've always had something fabulous to wear. Going through transitional weight phases sucks. It's happened every time I've had a kid. I have a conundrum of wanting to look and feel beautiful, but not wanting to buy clothes in that transitional size for fear that it won't fit later on. What a waste! melissaesplin-letote-sewing-2 Le Tote has had my back. They've been there to make me feel beautiful inside and out, no matter what my size. melissaesplin-letote-sewing-3 melissaesplin-letote-sewing-4 melissaesplin-letote-sewing-5 This month I wanted to challenge myself to sew. I've had this shirt half done on my cut table for nearly a month, it was time to finish it. I literally used the leftover scraps from two projects (this skirt and this shirt) to piece together this top. I had barely enough fabric! There's something satisfying about keeping great fabric from going to waste. melissaesplin-letote-sewing-7 I had a fun time getting back into the sewing game. I made a scout tee and added a ruffle bottom to it. I found the print in the L.A. fabric district and the plum at JoAnn. melissaesplin-letote-sewing-8 Outfit Details:

Calligraphy Quote of the Day

August 22, 2016
If you follow me on Instagram, I started this #calligraphyquoteoftheday series as a passion project. I don't publish a new quote daily, but rather every third post. So I don't go insane. I haven't shared any of them here, so I figure I may as well start posting them weekly here. Hopefully you enjoy them! Feel free to share, with credit of course. Pinning is welcome (and highly appreciated). melissaesplin-creativity-is-messy-calligraphy-qotd-quote If you'd like to learn calligraphy for yourself, consider taking one of my online workshops. We provide personal coaching to help you troubleshoot issues, bounce ideas off of and stay motivated. Check out the brush calligraphy (or brush lettering, whichever you prefer) here, or the pointed pen modern class here. These two have been on my mind a lot. My house is a disaster, but the creativity quote makes me feel better about it. Penned with a new favorite brush marker, the Zig Art & Graphic Twin. Juniper got her little paws on these markers and didn't destroy the tip. It's a rubberized tip that has tons of flexibility, but also great structure. It doesn't fray. OMG. IT DOESN'T FRAY. melissaesplin-quote-calligraphy-bravery-qotd View the video of this quote right here on my YouTube channel. This resonated with me because Felix had a fever-induced febrile seizure last week and we just felt so out of control. So scared. But Chris was quick on his feet to get help. In the end everything was well. Felix is right as rain, we just now know what to do if it happens again. I'm grateful everything went well and that Felix is healthy again! Stay tuned for next week's installment. Or follow me on Instagram if you want to see more. :)

Matching Back-To-School Tees

August 17, 2016
Girl Charlee approached me to see if I wanted to sew something with their fabric. Uh DUH. Yes! It's about darn time that I turn on the freaking sewing machines. melissaesplin-girlcharlee-horse-fabric-sewing-matching-outfits-1 This horse fabric screamed both Penelope and Junie. And heck, I had enough yardage, I made a third shirt for Penelope's BFF, Kate. The girls were particularly bored yesterday so I asked them if they wanted to help me make matching tees for them. Their reactions couldn't have been better if I had asked them to go to Disneyland with me. #bestreactionever melissaesplin-girlcharlee-horse-fabric-sewing-matching-outfits-9 While they helped me cut the pattern pieces, they were planning on which days they schemed about which day of the week they would wear their matching shirts. Originally they wanted to wear them on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Ha! Shirt Details:
  • Penelope's shirt (2/3 of a yard) using size 6/7 in Megan Nielsen's Mini Briar
  • Kate's shirt, 2/3 of a yard using one of her favorite tees as a template (using this concept)
  • Junie's shirt, 1/3 of a yard using a pattern I made for her Easter dress (still not posted yet, EEP!)
The fabric is light weight, I wouldn't necessarily recommend it for a dress unless it was gathered at the waist to add extra volume. However, when the girls wore it, it was substantial enough that they didn't need to wear camisoles underneath. It's possibly because of the print/color. Love it though. Easy knit to work with and plenty of structure to sew with a standard sewing machine (although I totally used my serger for most of the work). melissaesplin-girlcharlee-horse-fabric-sewing-matching-outfits-8 melissaesplin-girlcharlee-horse-fabric-sewing-matching-outfits-7 melissaesplin-girlcharlee-horse-fabric-sewing-matching-outfits-5 melissaesplin-girlcharlee-horse-fabric-sewing-matching-outfits-4 Can you guess who's the star of the show? It breaks my heart that Junie is growing up so fast. How did this girl get so big?!? She'll be 2 next month!! melissaesplin-girlcharlee-horse-fabric-sewing-matching-outfits-2

DIY Gilding Calligraphy with Deco Foil

August 13, 2016
This post is in partnership with Therm O Web's Deco Foil™ line. I've been using this stuff for a couple of months now and I figured it was high time I shared with you how I use it! It's incredibly easy and adds SO MUCH SPARKLE to your work (calligraphy or otherwise). melissaesplin-decofoil-calligraphy-gilding-1a In the above image I've applied the metallic foil (I don't dare say gold, because it's not real gold) in 3 different ways; (from top) laminator, bone folder and die cut machine. My favorite is probably the die cut machine, second is the bone folder because of the application. But I'll talk about that a little later. The foils come in a zillion different colors. I'm excited to try the watercolor foils soon because of the subtle color variation from one spot to another. Here I've used Pink Melon (top), Rose Gold (middle) and Copper (bottom). I use the copper one the most, it photographs better than the lighter golds do, so I prefer that. Let's go through the materials needed for this technique and just get going, shall we? melissaesplin-decofoil-calligraphy-gilding-1b SUPPLIES: The supplies list feels kind of long to me; but I bet if you're anything like me, you'll have most of these things. For the instructions, click the read more button below! melissaesplin-decofoil-calligraphy-gilding-2 First things first, prep the "ink". Get your Deco Foil™ Adhesive pen and pull out the nib. If it hasn't been used before, you can just pull it out with your fingers. If you've used it for other projects, you may need to pull out with pliers to keep your fingers from getting sticky. melissaesplin-decofoil-calligraphy-gilding-3 Insert the blunt end of a toothpick into the pen. melissaesplin-decofoil-calligraphy-gilding-4 There's a valve that you have to depress in order for the adhesive to come out. Press it with the toothpick while squeezing the pen. If you're having a hard time getting enough pressure on the pen, grab some pliers or just squeeze the pen tube until the adhesive comes out. Note: if you have miniatum on-hand, you can use that instead of bleeding out the adhesive pen. melissaesplin-decofoil-calligraphy-gilding-6 Now clean your nib with windex/dishsoap. It should help keep the adhesive from destroying the pen. melissaesplin-decofoil-calligraphy-gilding-5 Now you're ready to load the pen and start writing/drawing! melissaesplin-decofoil-calligraphy-gilding-7 It's much easier to see what you're doing when writing on black paper. As you can see the glossy adhesive stands out nicely. If you're using white paper, you may want to sit where light can bounce off of it. Make sure your hairlines don't go too fine. melissaesplin-decofoil-calligraphy-gilding-8 Here's what it looks like while it's still drying. The white spots aren't ready to be foiled yet. melissaesplin-decofoil-calligraphy-gilding-9 Now we're ready to foil. I should mention that there's not a specific time window where this won't foil. You can leave it to set for a couple hours and be just fine. As long as no dust or any oils come in contact with it, you should be fine to go. If you don't wait long enough for the adhesive to set, the foil will explode on you a little bit. Not like BOOM! and a puff of smoke, but you'll get foil in places where you don't want foil. melissaesplin-decofoil-calligraphy-gilding-10 Cut your foil piece to size and put it on the embosser base. I like to put a cover sheet of card stock overtop to apply more pressure from the embosser/die cut machine. melissaesplin-decofoil-calligraphy-gilding-11 Roll it through once or twice. For the bonefolder method: Place the foil on top with a guard sheet overtop so nothing slides around. Apply even pressure across the foiled area, but don't over rub or it will burnish the metal and loose a lot of its luster. For the Laminator method: Place the foil on top of the artwork and slide into folded parchment paper. Send the artwork through the laminator folded side first on the 5ml setting. melissaesplin-decofoil-calligraphy-gilding-12 Now admire your results! melissaesplin-decofoil-calligraphy-gilding-13 It's a great way to add some brightness to a Thank You note, an envelope or anything. If you're not the artist type, just add foil to your favorite stationery. It's wicked easy. So let's break down the different methods below: melissaesplin-decofoil-calligraphy-gilding-14 The Bone Folder Method I had small areas to add gold, so I used a bone folder instead. I burnished some parts of the "Thanks", but it gives a subtle look to it. The nice thing about using a bone folder is that no heavy equipment or electricity is required here. melissaesplin-decofoil-calligraphy-gilding-15 The Laminator Method The laminator works well if you don't have other things on the paper. For some reason the foil stuck to my ink in addition to sticking to the adhesive. If you're adding metallic details to pre-printed work, this may not be the best method. melissaesplin-decofoil-calligraphy-gilding-16 The Die Cut/Embosser Method I found I had the most success with this method. The only drawback is on some occasions, if I didn't wait long enough for the adhesive to dry, the shades would explode on me because of the pressure used in order to apply the foil. I hope you found this tutorial useful! Foiling ALL the things is just so much fun. And everyone things you're magic. I like it when people think I'm magic (I'm not though). If you use this method, I'd love a tag on Instagram so I can admire your work!
