Fave Slouchy Tee Refashion

September 30, 2011
I bought this tee at H&M while in New York last year for BlogHer. I was with my mom & she did not see the awesomeness in this top. Maybe it's because it's totally 80's & she already lived through that era (I don't remember much of it). Maybe because it's so ugly (so ugly it's cool). I loved the detailing in the top & the gold foil in the beach scene. I also love that I wore this at 8 months pregnant and still wear it now. It's one of those few items of non-maternity, maternity clothing that I don't feel the urge to throw up on. Any postpartum ladies out there know what I'm referring to? This shirt was getting sort of ragged. The white wasn't as white as it could be - I'm totally clueless when it comes to keeping whites white. I try, but after about a year my whites start to look dingy. Any advice would be awesome. I decided that it was time I either chuck the shirt or give it new life. I cut off the neckline detailing, dyed it & trimmed up the sides a bit for a more fitted look. Of course, upon cutting the neckline (which I don't regret one bit) I realized the neck was much too gaping for my taste. I had a couple of options, but being very inspired by This ILK's harness jewelry (you don't google that, btw) I thought it'd be pretty sweet to incorporate that idea into my refashion. I used a combination of teal, turquoise & apple green Rit dye to get this color. I kept thinking of the fall brights that are so popular right now. I used the chain to create a draped effect in the back. It brings the neckline up in the front & adds more visual interest in the back. I'll definitely be doing this on any other gaping tees I own. It took very little time & I really like the result. Here's a quick, no-photo step-by-step on how to do it:
  • try your shirt on & place your gaping tee seams where you want them to lie
  • measure the distance between the two seams
  • cut two chains, one just slightly longer than the above measurement
  • attach both chains with a jump ring on both ends
  • secure jump ring onto your shirt by doing a satin zig-zag stitch or hand stitch
  • wear
I really do love the new look of this top. Can you tell that I'm getting excited to talk about refashioning clothing at Sewing Summit next week? I truly can't wait. Click here to view outfit details.

Tie-Front Refashion

September 30, 2011
Tie front tops are all the rage right now. In fact, I've not been able to get this top out of my head since the moment I spied it on Anthropologie's site. Why does Anthro seem to make me so depressed? Perhaps it's their perfectly executed visions of style & beauty that I always try to grasp, but never can. Don't get me started on that store. I have a love/hate relationship with it. Am I the only one? Not even a week after I spied that top, I found this baby at a thrift store close by my house. Love. Now this might not be that noticeable to some, but totally by me, I was totally put off by the super high neckline & the keyhole below. I still had dreams of the V tie neck like that Anthro one. With some unpicking here & some stitching there, I was able to make the neck tie much more modern. I also tailored the sleeves by 2 inches on each side. It's subtle, but I feel like it's in the 21st century now. So what do you think? Was it worth the whopping $4? I think so. To see more details of this outfit, check out the fashion blog.  A few of you were asking how I did it, I'm terrible at explaining, but here's an illustration to show basically what I did: Hope that helps!!

Best Friends Forever

September 28, 2011
Just finished this quote today: Lucky I'm in love with my best friend. I did this for an anniversary gift. I guess this is from a Jason Mraz song. Don't listen to his music, but I can totally relate to the quote. I constantly think about how lucky I am to have married my best friend.

A Simple Refashion

September 27, 2011
I bought this dress 5 years ago, just after Chris & I were married. I was feeling particularly broke (we were finishing college at the time), but I was in need of some retail therapy. I went to DI & found this lovely gem in the little girl's section marked for $4. Bargain! I was especially excited about my find since there was a group of 3 hipster girls tearing through the women's dress section in search for (my guess) something equally awesome. My best guess is that this  is some sort of service uniform. It was an ugly tan - perhaps the worst shade of tan for my pasty white skin. I've worn this dress a few times, but only ever with tights or in the summer when my legs reach their darkest hue: fair (as opposed to glow-in-the-dark). It's a very utilitarian dress with pockets an elastic waist & button up top. I llike the mixture of masculine meets feminine & what drew me in to this dress in the first place were the red details. I can't seem to find a before photo of this dress, so I've used my photoshop magic to illustrate what the heinous tan did to my skin. Yikes to the Yikes power. I just dyed it with some liquid Rit - I mixed scarlet & brown together & got a beautiful light maroon. I'm really happy with the results & that you still get to see the original pops of red. What do you think?

Also, I just got my boots back from the cobbler today. I had them shined & resoled. It's amazing the difference that that makes. I'll actually be able to wear these gorgeous babies during the winter & not slip all over myself. So worth the $30, especially considering they cost a whopping $8 to begin with. Dye provided by Rit Dye.

  • top: Stewart & Brown, won from giveaway

Life Is Good!

September 26, 2011
We had a great weekend! I hung out with my sisters, taught the second calligraphy class this month & cuddled tons with the kiddos in bed. Saturday night/Sunday morning was tough. Penelope woke up screaming at about 3am & would not calm down. Chris got her, but couldn't calm her down so I went downstairs, got her and wrapped her in a big wool blanket next to me in bed. Thing about sleeping with your kids: it's fun to cuddle, but there's little to no sleep when you've got a squirmy space heater next to you. Felix slept right through all of Penelope's trauma, but then had some trauma of his own at about 4:30am. Now Chris and I were really pooped and had both kiddos in the bed with us. We were both super wasted at church, so thankfully the Sunday nap came to rescue us from our kiddo hangover. Life is still good, though. Penelope's hilariously cute & Felix is still as happy and chubby as ever. These next two weeks are going to be a bit insane with design deadlines & preparation for Sewing Summit. I've got some fun posts coming up; but for the most part I'm taking it easy in preparation for my refashion class. Anyone going to Sewing Summit with me? I did the above calligraphy project for a girl that I used to take ballet with. I painted these letters by hand - since the scale was a bit large for my very detailed pen. Love how the paint is uneven. Adds a lot of personality & texture to it.

ISLY Elsewhere

September 23, 2011
This week has been absolutely bonkers. The weeks up until mid-October are just going to be insane, I tell you. But I've made sure to squeeze in as much fun as possible. Here's what's been going on:

Remember how I posted about this delicious flatbread technique over at Rhodes blog? Well I shared it over on Simply Modern Mom with a few adjustments. I make flatbread sandwiches using this technique at least twice a week. It's soo good I can't get enough. Check it out & go make yourself some Rhodes flatbread right now.

I make yarn pom poms for decorating our tree every year, but this year is going to be different. Check out Skip to My Lou for how to make killer jersey pom ornaments using old t-shirts. Heck, use this tutorial to accessorize your hair. I know I'm going to.

Last night was the best night out I've had in a long time. Jill, Libby and I drove to UVU to listen to JESSICA HISCHE (my design/lettering/illustration icon!). She was so inspiring, transparent & approachable. Honestly, I'm more thrilled about meeting her than I would be if I had the chance to meet Heidi Klum. She's way awesomer. (No offense, Heidi, you're still cool, it's just Jessica is cooler). I hate my expression in this pic; it's a little scary - but you see my excitement?!? It was a dream for Jill & me to actually meet her. So much talent right there. Seriously. That woman can letter circles around me. Also, I'm way jealous that she & her husband live in San Francisco. So jealous.

What are you up to this weekend? I'll be teaching another calligraphy class - can't wait!

I Am A Giant Tag-alonger

September 22, 2011
One thing I know for sure about myself is the fact that I have no motivation to do anything unless there's a deadline. Like. . . What? we've got a wedding to go to in two hours & no clean clothes in the house? I guess I'll do the laundry/ironing now. That's just how I roll. Which is, of course, one of the reasons why I keep up this blog. It gives me the opportunity to make for myself deadlines so I actually get off my sorry butt & do something productive. Yesterday two of my favorite bloggers announced a little challenge that they're doing (along with some other big-time bloggers - see below). Nicole & Emily are decorating doll houses & taking us along as they do it. Genius. They even invited anyone else interested to tag-along. Can I participate, can I, can I? I'm totally the un-cool little sister here. ;) Well, hello there, hand-me-down dollhouse that I've been meaning to refurb for 3 years! Maybe you'll actually get your time to shine now. This challenge is the perfect opportunity for me to finally check this off my to-do list. I'm going to refurbish this darling little mushroom house, but I'm going to take the challenge one step further, though. I've not spent any money on this dollhouse (it was a hand-me-down) and I'm going to keep it that way. That's going to be tough, but I think I have enough supplies on-hand to do something really fun. Anyone going to tag-along with me?! Also, I'm so incredibly excited to see what the above uber-talented ladies come up with. They're sure to be show-stoppers, for sure.

Leather Cuff Wallet Tutorial

September 21, 2011

Last month when Jill & I were brainstorming together, she mentioned that she wanted to make a wallet for her husband's birthday. Immediately I thought of a wallet I'd been thinking of making for some time. It was gosh probably over a year ago, I went to Tandy with Susan & the guy helping us wanted to show us a picture & pulled off his cuff to reveal his wallet was the cuff! I just remember thinking 1) that's rad & 2) why haven't I thought of that?

Click here to see the full outfit

Jill & I spent an afternoon working out the pattern & shooting this tutorial a few weeks ago & it's high time I share the how-to with you. This project is a perfect handmade man gift that looks super cool, is super functional & easy to make. I'm sure I'm going to find myself making a bunch of these for the men in my family for Christmas.

This tutorial includes patterns for both men's & women's sizing. I'm loving my cuff, by the way. It's perfect for going to shows or out dancing when all you need is some cash and an ID. ALSO, I fully plan on sporting one of these at the Sewing Summit in a few weeks. It's the perfect place to stash business cards.

• S U P P L I E S •

  • 1-3 ounce leather
  • snaps & setter
  • tape
  • pattern
  • hole punch
  • hammer
  • paint brush & water
  • bulldog clips
  • scissors

Print out your pattern pieces (provided in download below) & tape them onto your leather. Punch holes.

Cut out your pattern pieces. Remove tape & pattern pieces.

With your paintbrush, wet the leather thoroughly along the fold.

Fold leather over & match up holes. Secure leather in place with bulldog clamps.

Sandwich tabs between folded pieces of leather & attach your top snaps.

Attach your bottom snaps & let the leather dry for 2-4 hours before removing bulldog clips.

Remove bulldog clips & insert money, cards, etc inside the flaps.

Snap in place!

If you’d rather not wear it, fold it in half & stuff in your back pocket.
• O P T I O N A L •

Make a statement by adding more snaps to your cuff. Keep your money, cards in place by sewing a line along the width of the cuff. This is perfect for traveling, concerts or going around pocket-less.

Crazy Mixed Outfit

  • dress: Stewart + Brown, won from a giveaway
  • leggings: Target, $3
  • necklace: handmade, $1
  • moccasins: thrifted, $6

Penelope & Felix Shared Nursery

September 20, 2011
PHOTODUMP!! I took about 70 pictures yesterday with Penelope at my side. I just recently gave her our 6 year old coolpix point & shoot to use at her disposal & she loves it. She looked so grown up, snapping away at her room. I had to snap this little portrait of her. I thought the lighting was perfect on her. So, would you like a tour of Penelope & Felix's shared space? I'll do my best to cite all of the sources for everything, but if you find I've missed something, please feel free to ask in the comments. Here's Penelope reviewing her shot of Felix's crib. So cute. Here's what her bedroom looked like before Felix moved in with her. GROSS & unfinished. We were playing around with different bedding options for Penelope before we decided a toddler bed was best. Let's start on Penelope's side.
  • Pillowcase: vintage, gift from Dani
  • Small bolster & teal blanket: Little Giraffe, from BlogHer '09
  • Park City Teddy Bear: gift from my grandparents when I was 2
  • Quilt: handmade by my mom, gift
  • Bedframe: Ikea, $90
  • Rocking chair: from Caitlin, $90
  • Watercolor: mine
  • Growth chart: Petite Lemon*
  • Mirror: Thrifted + spraypainted, $2
  • Knit wool blanket: handmade by my cousin
  • Teddy bear: gift
  • Pillows handmade by me (left, right)
  • Peacock print: A Vintage Poster*
  • Frame: Michaels + spraypainted, $10
  • Trash can: Ikea, $25 - this is where her toys hide
  • Night stand: hand-me-down from mom & repainted
  • Dinos: Walmart + spraypainted, $2
  • Book basket: thrifted, $1
  • Dachshund lamp: won from a Clever Tomato giveaway
  • Rug: Urban Outfitters, $50
  • Curtains: Ikea, $15
I really need to get a pic of Felix up there. Stat.
  • Frames: thrifted + spraypainted, $1.50
  • Painting: mine
  • Shelf: Ikea, $6
  • Chairs: Ikea, $30
  • Trash can: Ikea, $25
  • Wooden bead roller coaster: Ikea, $8

  • Elephant print: A Vintage Poster*
  • Frame: Michaels, $10
  • Bear: gift
  • Yellow bed sheet: vintage, gift from Dani
  • Blanket: Chris's old baby blanket
  • Mobile: handmade by me
So, there you have it: Felix & Penelope's room is COMPLETE and for just under $400 total. This total includes everything we've ever spent on this room. NOT BAD, eh? Penelope does a fantastic job of making big messes in here, but now that it's all decorated it's somehow easier to clean. Do you find that way about finished rooms? I love that there's a lot of sentimental furniture, decorations & toys in this room. It certainly adds a lot to the personality & feeling of love that I want in my home. What do you think? How do you decorate with love? For comparison, this is what Penelope's bedroom looked like at our old place. *Peacock & Elephant posters provided by A Vintage Poster. Growth Chart provided by Petite Lemon.

I Love Belts

September 19, 2011
This is no secret as evidenced by my gigantic pile of belts in my closet. My cousin-in-law found two beaded belts a while ago & brought them by yesterday night. I wasted NO time incorporating them in my wardrobe. I also love the beading so much, I wore the belt backwards.
  • necklace: Vintage Oddity, $18
  • cardi: thrifted, $4
  • maxi: H&M, $15
  • belt: thrifted, $1.50
  • shoes: thrifted, $5
TOTAL: $43.50 Backwards!

A Sneak Peek

September 19, 2011
I'm officially DONE decorating Felix & Penelope's bedroom. Well, I lied. I have to print a photo of Felix (how do I not have any printed photos of my 7 month old?!?) & frame it next to a photo of Penelope. Over the weekend, Chris and I were busy cleaning & organizing the house. It's like I'm 8 1/2 months pregnant again - minus the 30 pounds. I think it's because we've decided we're going to live in our place for at least another 6 months. No moving just before the holidays! YAY! Yesterday, Penelope & I had fun cutting out shapes with felt. She just massacred her felt (had a good time doing it, too) and I cut out fish silhouettes & circles (bubbles). I've been so close to sharing Felix & Penelope's shared room with you, but it was missing something. A mobile. I made a little mobile to go over Felix's bed. I wanted to keep with the orange & yellow theme, so I grabbed a  bunch of felt in that same color family & went to town cutting shapes. I sewed the circles all in a line to make the bubbles and draped them over the embroidery hoop (much like Susan's chandelier). I cut two of each fish & sewed the two together in skewed lines to add weight and interest. I assembled it all together using a million and a half square knots, industrial embroidery floss and embroidery hoops. Let me know if you're interested in a tutorial. Overall I'm really happy how this turned out. Also, it cost nothing to make. If I were to itemize it out, it'd be under 50¢ and that would be between the embroidery floss & the embroidery hoops. The felt was free from my mom, the hoops were 6 for $1 and the floss was $3 for a million yards. It's masculine, and fits within the theme of the room. That has been my biggest challenge with decorating Penelope & Felix's room - being gender neutral. Thankfully I started out with a mostly yellow/orange theme with Penelope's room to begin with. All pink would've been much harder to make masculine.

White Balance Lens Cap Review

September 15, 2011
I've got some exciting stuff to share with you soon: A ginormous giveaway & the big reveal of Penelope's & Felix's room. Their room is coming along quite nicely (well, that is if Penelope will ever stop destroying it long enough for me to clean it up & take pics of it). I'm also excited to share with you my new toy: White BAlens Lens Cap. This (besides my wireless remote), might be my favorite camera gadget so far.

I took 5 minutes to find this white balance in Kelvin. BAlens did it in 10 seconds.

I've never been happy with the white balance presets that any of my Nikons have had to offer & the auto can get so frustrating when in mid-shoot you have different color corrections. It's especially annoying when batching photos to find the colors all over the map! Seriously, I've spent hours editing poorly exposed/balanced photos before. It's misery. Almost exactly two years ago I took Nicole's table top class, where she emphasized heavily on shooting in manual & mentioned manual white balance. Since then, I've gone completely manual when shooting and I've been using my Kelvin setting for white balance. I've been using that for the last 1+ years and it's MUCH more consistent than relying on presets. I'm sort of getting the hang of it, but I'm nowhere near consistent enough; especially when in dark situations with multiple light sources.

I forgot to adjust my white balance from earlier in the day. BAlens fixed that.

This little lens cap has seriously solved all of my problems. Not kidding. You can see a huge difference in these photos, right? I sure do. No matter what, the BAlens is going to be consistent. EVERY. SINGLE. TIME. Unlike a greycard. It's also pretty seamless to use this while capturing fleeting moments. The lens cap is always with you - as long as you have your lens that you bought the cap for, at least . You just turn on your camera, follow your white balance preset instructions & take a picture with your cap on. Then you take the cap off & shoot away. It's genius.

This is close, but still too orange/red.

I love that I don't have to worry or guess anymore to find the correct color balance in low/artificial light settings. No matter the light source, this thing helps my camera properly adjust for the lighting & gives me perfect skin tones every time. That's huge. I hate it when my pictures make me look like Snooky. Since using the BAlens cap, I've cut down on  my photoshop time by 90%. No joke. SO worth the $45-65 price. This is the least amount of time I've spent in photoshop since I started blogging. I have better things to do with my time - like nap with my kids. Or actually do the laundry. What's your favorite photography gadget? BAlens provided by Photojojo - THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!!

Cheater, Cheater

September 14, 2011
It's been a good year since I last fit into my favorite skinnies, but I'm getting SO CLOSE! Here are the facts: I can put them on, but I can't button them up without a seriously uncomfortable muffin top. That's not putting me down, though. I just remedied that. With two minutes, my sewing machine & 3 1/2 inches of bias tape, I can wear my skinnies again. They just button in a different loop. I was getting really annoyed with scouring the house for a sturdy-enough rubber band or dealing with the muffin top that I did this. Just take 3-4 inches of bias tape (1/2 inch, double fold) & sew a loop onto the edge of your waistband, adjacent to the button hole. You'll want to pin the same side of each end onto the denim so it creates the kind of loop pictured above. Sew & wear! Time yourself. I betcha you can do this in less than 1 minute.

Granny Vest Before & After

September 13, 2011
What is up with me & granny stuff lately? I found this in Phoenix a couple of months ago, I even refashioned it about a month ago & haven't worn it (until yesterday) or shared it with you. I don't know what about this vest that attracted me to it. Perhaps it was the delicate eyelet lace & the eyelet pinstripes down the front. Who knows. For some reason I had a very Ruche-worthy vision in my head at the time I bought it. I didn't do much besides take in the sides about 2 inches. It's a much needed improvement, but I think most of the transformation is in the styling. I haven't worn it mostly because it's been too darned hot to wear more layers than necessary. Since it was cooler yesterday, I had to give it a go. I don't think I'll be pairing this baby without the belt anytime soon, but I like it for some strange reason. I feel like when paired with the cowl, it adds a lot more volume to my bust - not necessarily a bad thing for a girl of my proportions. I am tempted to make the back more of a racer-back rather than keeping it plain jane sleeveless. I think that might add a bit more style to the piece. What do you think? Should I make it a racerback?

Hello, Fall!

September 13, 2011
It's nice the weather is finally cooling down enough to wear more than one layer. YIPPEE!

This Weekend

September 12, 2011
We had a great weekend! What did we do? I don't know - lots & lots of cuddling with the kids. I got some adorable pictures of Felix & Chris, I have to share with you. Chris just loves to play with Felix (and Penelope!), and there's nothing sweeter than to watch him be completely silly with them. I was playing around with my white balance settings & showing him photos every once in a while. After I showed him the first set of pics, he said something about being bald & went back to playing with Felix. This time, he was singing a song - a song that he made up. Eu sou careca - I am bald. He's hilarious. Little did he know, I was capturing his goofy moment on video. HA! That's the best part about having a DSLR with vid capabilities! He thought I was slowly framing my image, but I was recording every bit of that funny song of his. It's been a really long time since I've shared pictures & info on baby Felix, I thought I'd share a few stats with you. He's a chunk-monster! AKA the Feli-monster. He's 20lbs (95th percentile), 28 inches long (off the charts for his age) & his head. . . oh his head is WAAAAAAAY off the charts. He's got the average size head of an 18 month old, which explains his difficulty sitting up. He still hasn't reached that mile marker yet. It's getting a bit frustrating that he still wobbles in his high-chair, but he's getting there and I'm more than happy for him to take his time. I'm just glad he's not like my younger sister was and walking at 7 1/2 months. Also, this video makes my heart melt. I still need to remember to shoot horizontally when I'm in video mode, but you get the idea. He just lights up whenever I talk to him. Do you see that cute gaping smile at the end? He's got me wrapped around his tiny little finger.

Handmade Earrings

September 9, 2011
It was so fun to meet up with other creatives & see some old painting & drawing pals last night at the Creative Collaborative. I'll be honest, I hadn't planned what I was going to talk about, so I was a little scatter-brained. All-in-all it went well, though. CJane was inspiring, too. I wore these earrings last night. Earrings that I made in about 2 seconds, inspired by Jenn's geometric painted blocks and this Clare Vivier hot pink clutch (via). These earrings are the easiest on the face of the planet to make. Want the full DIY? Here we go.

• S U P P L I E S  •

  1. You'll want to cut out your leather to the desired shape. I decided on a circle.
  2. Glue the leather onto the posts.
  3. Allow glue to set/cool.
  4. Paint geometric asymmetrical shapes with contrasting colors
  5. Wear.
Wasn't that a breeze? Now go make a million for all of your earring-wearing girlfriends. Aren't my shoes hot? They have snake-skin details on 'em & they matched my earrings rather well. My sister-in-law took this pic last night. Here's the full outfit from last night. This tutorial is free for personal use and should not be distributed/republished without my consent. If you would like to use this tutorial for commercial purposes, please email me. Thanks!

More Calligraphy

September 8, 2011
I just did this for Pam. I can't tell you how nerve-wracking it was to do this! She sent me the print (found here - love this girl's shop. We were in the same painting & drawing program in college) & had me letter her wedding info on top. Thankfully, Ashley prints her artwork on the best paper ever (moab 100% rag 300GSM) so I had no problem with the nib skipping or the ink bleeding. Phew! But I did have to practice on a couple of sheets of paper before feeling comfortable attempting it on the real deal. I'm going to be delivering this to Pam tonight on my way to Creative Collaborative (if you're in SLC & want a ride, lemme know). Can't wait! Also, I still have room in my September 24th class, sign up here. No worries if you're not local. Sign up here to receive email updates for the online class.

Styled. Issue #2 - Party Suite

September 7, 2011
Jill & I have been on pins & needles waiting for the second issue of Styled. magazine to come out! We were asked to contribute with a printable or DIY for fall merrimaking, so Jill & I collaborated. This is the product of a whole lot of work. Seriously HOURS. We designed all of the party elements from scratch: invitations, RSVP cards, place cards, paper garland, thank yous, menu cards, favors – this suite has everything. We also did all of the styling, photography & production work. Head over to A Subtle Revelry to see the second issue & download the artwork (we're DIY 6). A huge thanks to Tai Pan for letting us use their decor at our disposal and Ruby Snap for the cookies in the favor shot. My only regret was that we didn't make the shoot an actual party. We totally should've invited people. Next time, right? So if you're planning on a little get-together or a party this fall, please use our printables, k? Also - I recommend you hire Jill to do some design work for you. Her work is the shizzzz.

Jill designed the place cards, menu & banner. I did the invite, RSVP, favor, thank you.

I'll be speaking in Provo tomorrow at the Creative Collaborative meeting alongside CJane. It'll be good times. You should come if you're around! AND. . . as per your request, I scheduled another calligraphy class (the 24th), I've not publicized this yet, but there are still a couple of spots left if you're interested in attending. Twisted Pony Holder Tutorial

September 6, 2011
If I had a dog, I'd buy this leash in a heartbeat. I don't remember how I came across it, but isn't it just so lovely? I wanted to incorporate the twisted leather technique into a project & instantly a pony holder came to mind. I've made a few now - they really take less than 5 minutes, hardly any supplies & are super stylish. I feel like I've put my hair in a pony every day this summer, so it's a fun way to make the pony less blah.

• S U P P L I E S •
  • 2-4 oz. leather scrap
  • X-acto knife
  • printed pattern (see download below)
  • hole punch smallest setting
  • elastic cording
  • scissors
  • hammer (not pictured)
  • double stick tape (not pictured, optional)
Print & trim the pattern & place pattern on top of leather. I used double stick tape to secure it in place, but that’s totally optional. Cut out leather. Click the "read more" button below to continue. Take the pointed end & insert it into the adjacent slit. Flip it around 360º. Flatten out. Repeat the twisting for the other end. Punch holes along guides or as close to the twist as possible. Cut cording 2-3 inches long & tie a knot on one end. Thread the cording through the first hole. Thread the open end of the cording through the second hole, adjust the length so it's approximately the diameter of a hair elastic. Tie a knot and trim the excess. Secure your pony or braid with the pony holder by placing the leather on your hair first. Then twist cording & pull hair through again. Repeat until you have a firm hold. • O P T I O N A L •  This technique could be applied in a myriad of ways! Try scaling the pattern larger for a messy bun holder, or take a long piece of leather & make twists all along the length for a fun headband. This craft is perfect for small scraps. I wouldn't recommend doing this with vinyl or faux leather unless you back it with something pretty. Industrial weight felt would work well & look pretty, too. Click the button below to download these instructions and the pattern for this holder!

Calligraphy for Shutterfly

September 5, 2011
First, thanks for your patience over the weekend! We were moving all of our sites to Amazon's servers & it got super complicated. Moving forward, this site should load a lot faster (especially for international folks)!! There are still some kinks to work out. The header is a hot mess at the moment, but we should be fixing that soon. Let me know if anything malfunctions, k? Especially downloads!! I've been looking forward to sharing this with you since last February!! Can you believe I've actually kept a secret that long? Just kidding. I had the opportunity to do some calligraphy for the lovely Petite Lemon ladies for their Christmas 2011 line. It's so fun to see how & where they've used my lettering! Here are a few samples. These surely got me excited to send some photo cards out this year. I made the angel. Love the unexpected color scheme on this one. I lettered "deck the halls". I love square photo cards! I lettered "Merry & Bright". Love the angular aspect of this one. I lettered "joy". I love how it plays with that modern wreath. Love that wreath! I would totally send this one out. I lettered "fa la la". What a fun idea to play off the gift tag idea. I lettered "alleluia". This is a classic - could go with any theme or photo. I might need this one. I lettered "Blessed". I like the simple layout. Perfect for lots of pics.   You can find more of my lettering & embellishments in some of the designs you see here. This was not sponsored by Shutterfly. I'm just stoked to show you my work!

Migration

September 3, 2011

Hope Y'all are off to have a fabulous holiday weekend! Chris & I will be hard at work migrating the blog to a different server. It's going to be awesome; the site will load a million and a half times faster. So, please excuse any weirdness on here over the weekend. Also, if you could email me if something's acting up for you, I'd appreciate it tons.

THANKS!

Note from Chris: Thanks for the patience as the blog has been up and down all night. I made the mess and I get to clean it up. I'm going to bed now, but I'll be back at it tomorrow.

An Old Sweater + An Old Blanket

September 1, 2011
Over the weekend I refashioned an old yellow cable knit sweater & an unused blanket into a bolster pillow for the bed. It was fast, easy & cost next to nothing.  I was inspired by Susan's gorgeous cable knit pillows and while my pillow isn't nearly as stunning - that large scale is gorgeous - my attempt was practically free. I rolled up an old fuzzy blanket that we got for our wedding & never use and snagged the brightest yellow cable knit sweater I could find at DI and covered the old blanket. It's a bit lumpier than if I'd used a down bolster form, but I repurposed instead. Now I can consider my bed fully dressed. If it were up to Chris we'd have only two pillows on there, but I feel the need for a perfect 7. Also, the three in front are all repurposed handmade sweater pillows. Kind of adds a cozy component to the bed. You can see details of each pillow here: blue sweater pillow, orange sweater pillow.
