Daring Bakers May Challenge: Apple Strudel
May 30, 2009I have to admit, I wasn't very excited about this recipe. I haven't really been that excited about cooking in general, but it could just be laziness. I'm a little late in posting this, but here's the strudel recipe.
I think the strudel turned out great, although my crust turned out more like a pie crust than a pastry crust. Either way, it won't last long. It was a big hit around here! I topped it with creme fraiche and streusel and included blueberries in the filling. YUM.
Head over to Make Life Sweeter for the full recipe.
Leaf Pattern Available to Download!
May 28, 2009As I have mentioned before, I'm kind of on a pattern kick and last week's leaf drawing was just begging to become one. Funny story, Chris and I have had our 24" iMac for just over a year now, Chris has had the same background since then and wasn't planning on changing it any time soon until he saw the palace blue leaf pattern. I feel incredibly special right now.
Here they are, all available to download in all the Spring 2009 Fashion Trend colors:
Copy and paste any of these graphics onto your desktop and use this pattern for your blog, twitter, or myspace background! Links back to www.melissaesplin.com are always appreciated. If you'd like to show off what you've done with this graphic, leave a comment with a link or image showing me how you used this pattern!! ALL IS•LY downloads are available for personal use only. ENJOY!
I think the super lemon yellow is my favorite. ;)
Earth Day Winner #5: Let's Have a Picnic!
May 27, 2009Here's a little info about our fifth winner, Brooke:
Favorite colors: yellow, but I also like green, orange and blue
Interests: I like doing things outdoors, especially if they involve the water. I also enjoy traveling, cooking, and sunshine.
Something that makes me, me: Hm. I love to laugh and to make others laugh, even if its poking fun at myself. :D
It's funny, I had such a hard time coming up with something for Brooke, and we have so much in common! It was so good to spend so much time brainstorming ideas, though. I'm a little embarrassed it took me until this morning to figure out something that I could do that could be unique and fun and easy to ship. I have this huge pile of small paintings next to our computer, and I thought that it would be great to reuse them somehow, and here they are, as napkin rings.
I just took a couple of old paintings, ripped them in half (2.5" x 7") and added a snap! This way the rings can be shipped (or stored) flat and securly fastened together when in use. Perfect for a casual picnic in the park or at the pool (but maybe not too close to the water ;) ).
Here are the two paintings that gave their lives all for the sake of picnicking. I think I'm going to do this napkin ring thing again. Seriously. This idea would have come in handy for Penelope's party. Too bad it took me this long to think it up!
Earth Day Winner #4: I Heart Giraffes
May 26, 2009Here's a little to know about Leah:
Favorite Color: This is a hard one. I love Deep Burgundy red, and rich deep purple and Rich Royal blue, and and and the list goes on, but I think those are the top though.
Interests: Well obviously crafting, and quilting. I also love photography, reading, biking, ultimate Frisbee, being a mom and wife, nature and once again the list goes on.
Something that makes me me: I'd have to say Giraffes. I LOVE them and collect anything to do with them. I know it's a little strange, but nobody that knows me can see anything giraffe without thinking of me. [and she's never won anything before!!]
I first thought the giraffe motif was particularly awesome when I went window shopping at Jonathan Adler in San Francisco and my friend showed me the most adorable giraffe lamp. So, when Leah emailed me about her affinity for the lurpy-legged creature, I knew I had to incorporate it somehow.
I'm not sure why I thought of doing a travel tissue case, maybe because I saw it recently on Martha, but maybe in the back of my mind I thought, "Leah likes her kid, who might get a runny nose from time to time." So there you go. I made the case.
On the back side of the case, I stitched a little giraffe for her. I really like how this turned out, and I just enough vinyl to make another one. For me!
How to Make a Japanese Stab Bound Journal
May 25, 2009Click here to download the Japanese Stab Bind Tutorial
I was asked how I bound this book, and thought I would share it with all of you! The bind I did for Maggie is a variation on the Japanese Stab bind. I believe the stitching I did above is called a saddle stitch, going around the spine in basically a spiral, then doubling back to where you started & knotting with a square knot.Earth Day Winner #3: Magnetic Bookmark
May 25, 2009Here's a little info to get to know Magatha May:
Favorite color: Turquoise
Interests: Archery, Organization
Something about me: I captain my college's archery team, I live shiny things and what makes me me is the fact that I am picky about the visual layout of absolutely everything, from desk layout to page layout to how my books are arranged on the shelf and how my boyfriend's socks are in the drawer.
This one was a little bit of a challenge for me. I wanted to make something personal but small, since Maggie lives in Ireland and I didn't want to pay a million dollars in shipping. I'm not sure how the bookmark will help her in her organization or archery, but it is turquoise. The book might help her organize her grocery lists, or help her document ideas/dreams in the middle of the night. Who knows. Hope you like it, Maggie!
While surfing the internets I came across a lovely tutorial via Craft Chi on how to make magnetic bookmarks using old refrigerator magnets. I think it's a genius way to repurpose those unsightly magnets and to keep your place in your favorite book! I did a few things differently in making mine:
- I peeled off the top layer of coated paper to expose the more porous part of the magnet for better adhesion
- I used PVA glue and bookcloth as the hinge, it's a little more formal than masking tape and will last longer*
- I cut a notch on one corner of each side of the magnet to make the magnet easier to open
Earth Day Winner #2: Zebra Book
May 22, 2009Here are a few good tidbits about Heather:
Favorite colors: Red, Apple Green, Black
Interests: Guitar, Architecture, Interior Design
Something about me: I love zebras!
I made her a pamphlet book out of discontinued wallpaper, string, snaps and grey paper. I hand-painted the zebra pattern on the inside of the book. I'm thinking I like zebras now, too!
Earth Day Winner #1 + Free Downloads
May 21, 2009Remember the giveaway I did last month in celebration for Earth Day? I am nearing completion with only 2 more gifts left to finish. I'll be posting the items I've made for the winners throughout the week. In the email I sent out to the winners, I asked them a few questions to get to know them a little better. . .
Pattie, told me:
Favorite color: hot pink/fuschia/pink
Interests: crafting, blogging, writing, photography
What makes me, me: I'm earth-friendly and I love to do crazy things... I just bought myself a long blonde wig as my birthday gift. I love to organize parties and spend time with my husband and baby.
So, I made her 4 envelopes from brand-new, but discontinued (going-to-be-thrown-in-the-trash) wallpaper and coordinating cards to use for hand-written notes or invitations to a small party. Hope you enjoy them, Pattie! I thought I would include pdfs of the envelope & card designs. So click the links below to download:

May 19, 2009
I've been on a pen & ink fix right now. I've been hand lettering and drawing every chance I get thanks to the inspiration from my friend and this talented lady. My brother-in-law thinks this looks like a squid of some sort, I agree. It does remind me of being under water. I'm really happy how it turned out. I also wanted to do something a little different, and started drawing leaves. I like how it turned out, I'm going to leave the drawing as-is and turn it into a pattern. I'm also on a pattern kick right now, too.

UPDATE: I finished the leafy pattern! Check out the pattern and download it for twitter/desktop here!
Father's Day is Just around the Corner. . .
May 16, 2009A friend of mine (inspired by this post) asked me if I could make a book for her husband if she gathered quotes and blurbs from family and friends about him. Of course I was thrilled to do it!! I really love the idea of getting family and friends to say nice things about your husband and binding it in book form for a gift. Seriously it's genius. You know. . . father's day is around the corner, and I did bring my bookbinding supplies with me to Arizona, so send me an email if you want one made for the man in your life. Or woman. Heck, I wouldn't mind it if someone did that for me!
I'm so happy with how it turned out. I really wish you could touch your computer screens and truly feel how yummy the cork and leather combination is. I LOVE CORK. I LOVE CORK! It's just deliciously soft.
Like I said above, feel free to drop me a line (islyblog[at]gmail[dot]com) if you want a custom bound book. Also! Check out the right sidebar and join IS•LY with Google friend connect!
Petal Box Download + Mother's Day Thoughts
May 12, 2009My current mantra is "Better late than never. Better late than never." It took me over two weeks to get in touch with my sister to wish her a happy birthday, and my mom won't be getting her Mother's day gift for another couple of days because the post office isn't open on Saturdays.
I really want to share with you what I did for my mom for Mother's day/Birthday (they're often the same day). My mom is really special. She has worked really REALLY hard at doing everything. When I say everything, I mean it. I hope that she knows that her efforts don't go unnoticed. So for Mother's day, I thought it would be fitting to give her the gift of memory. I hand wrote random memories that I have of my mom and the thoughtful things she has done for me. I think the next time I do it, I should start a year in advance, because I know I've only hit the tip of the iceberg.
I cut out a bunch of 3"x3" squares and hand wrote (with pen & ink) my memories. Then I packaged it all with a box version of the petal envelope. I made up the template and want to share it with you! The box template is 3" x 3" x 1", super fast to make and perfect for packaging jewelry and other sweet little gifts.
Happy Mother's Day Weekend!
May 8, 2009
About two weeks ago this mama dove was sitting on two tiny, bright white eggs. Two days ago they hatched. It's so sweet to see this bird care for her young babies. She is a very brave mama, too. Her nest is barely 3 feet off the ground in a palm tree that's just outside the front door.
Happy Mother's Day weekend, y'all!
P.S. just discovered Tilt Shift Maker, which is a really cool website that makes all of your big landscape photos look like they're in miniature. It's an awesome way to waste time. I mention this, because I applied the filter to the photos above. You can't really tell, but it was fun to do.A Newly Improved Poopy Clutch Tutorial
May 7, 2009I had to make myself another poopy clutch (the old one was misplaced) and thought I could do much better than the tutorial/pattern I gave you last year. Without any further ado, I give you THREE versions of the old tutorial!! The new patterns are smaller and still fit up to 3 size 4 diapers plus a travel wipes case!! Very convenient for undercover diaper bags (aka purses).
Materials Notes:
It might be useful to note where my supplies can be found. Button studs, Leather (you'll want 2-3 ounce leather for this project) and hole punches can be found online at tandyleatherfactory.com, or check out their store locator for the store nearest you. (I sound like an advertisement, but seriously they have everything.)
As seen below, you can also use leather, vinyl or fused plastic. The folks at Etsy labs have a great tutorial on fusing plastic bags. I've seen some really cool fused bag projects.

The No-sew Version Similar to last year's pattern, this pattern is optimized for leather, vinyl or fused plastic. No sewing required! Click here to download the Normal Poopy Clutch Instructions• • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •
The No-Sew Version + SCALLOPED EDGE This version is my personal favorite. It's just like the first, it's made for leather, vinyl or fused plastic, but with a decorative scalloped edge to add a little flirty flair to those messy diapering sessions. No sewing required. Sewn Fabric Version Can't find leather or vinyl? Wanting to use up your ever-growing fabric stash?!? This pattern is for fabric, complete with instructions for two different edges. Click here to download the Normal Poopy Clutch Sewing InstructionsA Feather Pretty is in My Hair + Tutorial
May 4, 2009Sometimes I feel like a complete troll. I see some of the sweetest things on etsy and in my ultra cheapness I decide not to buy it but make it myself, and write a tutorial about it.
I've seen some stinking awesome feather headbands lurking around etsy, and I've made my own clippies with feathers on them, but the black-feather clippies didn't really work in my short, dark hair. So I'm very excited to tell you that I've assembled a headband complete with feathers and fabric flower that doesn't just blend in.
I've even made a FREE downloadable tutorial. Click here to download the Feather Headband Tutorial. If you're having problems downloading, please comment and I'll make sure to get it to you!
