Free & Cheap at DHD

There are a few more kits up at DHD, folks! I’m really exited about these, and I think you might, too. I signed up to make the free kit for the month, and it’s finally up! I say finally, because a couple of days ago I was trying to finish up the designs, etc when my computer decided not to recognize any of the fonts I’ve installed in the last 4 months. I couldn’t be more frustrated. I consider Chris and myself to be very computer savvy folks. We’re power users. We still haven’t fixed the problem. L-A-M-E! We have however figured out that Chris’s account doesn’t have the problem, so I have to use his account. EW. His account has cooties all over it. ;)

Side rambling: We tried using the same account when we first got married. We bickered a lot. His settings and my settings don’t play well together. We have separate accounts now & we’ve been happily married for almost 4 years.

Ramblings aside, I hope you’ll share my excitement for the newest designs in the shop. The above mini kit is yours for FREE. You just have to head on over to grab a copy. Here’s the link. I put a few fun papers in there that I hope you like. I just love repeat patterns.

I’ve been mildly obsessed with trying to find hand-lettered cursive fonts these last few months. I’ve been successful at finding a few – my favorite being Nelly script. So I thought I’d try my hand at making my own cursive alpha. I have yet to make it into a font (but I plan to). Snag this kit for $1 for the entire month of February. Here’s the link.

I made this kit last week (as well as the two below) and haven’t had the chance to blog about them. I hope you like them. They’re really sugary sweet. Here’s the link to the ‘lovely papers’ kit.

Here’s a set of 8 heart photoshop brushes. Scrolling is a current obsession of mine, can you tell? You can purchase the hearts brush kit here.

I have to admit something. I have a terrible time coming up with words and/or phrases to make into word art. Copy is NOT a strength. I wanted so badly to come up with some unique phrases for Valentine’s, but the only phrases that came to mind were cliché at best. So I turned to my favorite source of inspiration, music. There are quite a few love songs that are near and dear to my heart, so I turned some of my favorite phrases from those songs into word art. Here’s the list of artists that inspired the artwork. Be sure to give those songs a listen. They’re awesome. This kit includes 9 photoshop brushes and png files. You can purchase the kit here.

we make a pair of parentheses – the blow

you set the fire in me – tom vek

truly, madly, deeply – savage garden*

here is my beating heart – the bird & the bee

you give me rainbows & butterflies – MSTRKRFT

cootie wootie – pinback**

one more kiss tonight – calexico & iron and wine

* I don’t profess to like Savage Garden, or even tolerate it. I just think the truly, madly, deeply phrase is funny.

** Fortress isn’t really a love song, but it’s the song Chris and I were listening to when we kissed for the first time. How romantic, right? Also, I think the nickname cootie wootie is cute.

I’m pretty new to the digital realm myself, but I’ve got a few pointers that might lead you in the right direction.

First, do you have photoshop or photoshop elements? You’ll need either of those first and foremost. I believe you can get the latest photoshop elements at costco for $60. It’s an investment, but SO USEFUL. I’m sure you could also try to find the discs on ebay, they’d probably be cheaper.

Second, try starting out with the quick kits. These are fairly inexpensive kits that you can purchase where all you have to do is drag & drop your photos into the page and voila, you’re done. That might help you get your toes wet.

Third, head over to the DHD blog. Read it all. There are some fabulous tutorials and articles on scrapbooking that will likely get your creative wheels moving.

If you have any questions, check out the DHD forums or email me. I’ll see what I can do. Hope this helps!

    Cheers.

thanks for the free mini kit..i love the soft colour palette and pretty patterns. i’m a big time lover of the nelly script flourish font but can’t justify paying that much for it so i too thought of trying my hand at it and then turning into a font. i thought you did an impressive job with your classic cursive alpha!!

Oh, I totally totally totally agree on the separate accounts thing. I knew just by using Mike’s computer while we were dating that we’d have to have separate accounts. And good thing, too, because any time I have to use his settings, or he has to use mine, I think we BOTH go a little crazy!! We just use the same passwords for our accounts so that we don’t feel like we’re being “shut out” of anything :)

I’m so glad I found you in the blog maze! Love all these talented, creative, inspiring women online! ABSOLUTELY make a handwritten font…and tell me when you do. I’ll be your first customer! I love Nelly Script and am using it quite a bit, but I like to keep things fresh, so a new handwritten font would be delightful!

I look forward to checking in on your blog in between my own design work!

I’ve got to make the caps and the numbers. But I’ll be shouting it on the mountain tops when it’s available for download.

In the mean-time, if you don’t mind using images to make your words, you can still download the alpha for $1 here:
