Nicknames for Baby Felix

Penelope has practically a million nicknames. There are so many ways to break down & add-to her name: Pen, Nelly, the Nels, Lope, P, P-nut, Nelzebub, Nelzapea, Nelly Belly. . . really, I could go on & on. Felix on the other hand has ZERO nicknames. How do you shorten Felix? Fe? NO. This is the one flaw of the name Felix.

The nicknames we’ve got in the running are: F (but that doesn’t roll off the tongue quite like P does), Fitz, Double X (because of the two X’s in his name Felix Alexander). Then we’ve got the more humorous nicknames: WTF (Where’s the Felix?), Dos Equis & the F-bomb. I highly doubt any of our family members (grandparents especially) will end up adopting the last three, but I sure do find them hilarious.

While talking to my cousins this weekend I told them about his slightly unfortunate nicknames & James (or was it Natalie?) mentioned something about using the F-bomb idea in the baby announcements. Of course this spurred all sorts of ideas, namely the shirt you see above. I think it’s pretty awesome & perhaps I’ll use this “logo” on more things of his. We’ll see.

Do you have any ideas for nicknames for baby Felix? We’ve sort of been calling him buddy for lack of anything else, but considering I dated a guy named Buddy for two years, I’m sort of put off by that idea. Plus, it just seems too unoriginal. Ideas, pretty please?

I love F-Bomb! Oh how funny! We’re calling my new baby nephew Hambone because he was born so huger her doctor went ahead and scheduled a c-section for her because, in the doctor’s words, “you just might not come back from a baby like him!” He’s a chunk-and-a-half so Hambone stuck.

Funny nicknames are the bee’s knees. Especially for little baby men. So I love F-Bomb!

That onesie is sooooo awesome! I love it. I also love the Doz Equis nickname. mmmbeer…

    3. F-Bomb is super awesome. Felon? Felonious Monk? Feline leads to Lion… ya, you got a tricky one there.

    4. Padgett says:

F bomb makes me laugh! I never had any nicknames growing up, Padgett doesn’t shorten well, and I hated when people called me Paige. My friends never came up with anything good, my dad called/calls me “toonies” or “toon-lets” but I have no idea how he came up with those, they just stuck. I am guessing that will be the same for the little Felix man…

On an unrelated note – I have been practicing my calligraphy a lot! yay! but I am running into problems with getting the ink to flow off the nib… I will clean it and do the little mini scratches and such but it just won’t flow out… do I need a new nib? am I using incorrect paper (and if thats the case, what do you recommend?) anyway, I figured you would be the perfect person to ask! thanks melissa!

    5. meredith says:

i say “fella.” not shorter really but a nickname non the less.

    6. Hanna says:

Makes dropping the F-bomb have rather dire consequences!

    7. Kimber says:

f-bomb is the funniest thing ever! oh my goodness, and the shirt? adorable!

    8. Triana says:

LOVING the nickname! We’re having the exact same problem with our 11 week old, Anders. I have an almost-four-year-old named Gavin that has at least 100 nick names. We call him everything in the book. Master G, G-man, GavDude… you name it. And those are the ones that use his actual name! Anders is getting the short end of the stick!

I like Meredith’s suggestion of calling him Fella. That’s cute!

    9. Alyssa says:

That onesie is adorable! As for the nickname, you could go with something totally unrelated. When I was little my mum would call me all of her siblings names (it’s kind of a family habit) before finally giving up and calling me Fred – nothing like Alyssa – and it kind of stuck. 24 years later both my parents still call me Fred.

    10. Liz says:

F-Bomb is CRACKING me up haha.

    11. Emily says:

F-Bomb is brilliant! I’m going to call my friend Felix that from now on. We do call him Fee, but his best friend Levi is called Levvy so they sound like a couple of cartoon accountants with those names :P What about initials? My mum and her brother were Cod and Bod.

    12. Kayla says:

Haha I love the F-Bomb branding. Super clever.

I just call my kids baby. Even my 3 year old is still “Baby.” I’m super original that way.

    13. Emily says:

Love the onesie! Ha! The only names I can think of right now aren’t Felix specific- baby, boy, baby boy, little man, oh and you’re already used man child. ;)

    14. Jessica says:

We call my 2 yr old “squirt” it fits him and he now answers to it! Lol it’s so cute I think even when he is 6 foot 3 and a linebacker he will still be know as squirt- that’s just who he is! Plus the whole little sea turtle on nemo- love him lol!

    15. I love “F-Bomb” – that is the CUTEST onesie ever … ever … ever!! Love it!

    16. communikate says:

      that is hilarious.

      perfect branding!

    17. Tracy says:

      F- Bomb is hilarious!

How about ‘El’ …. pronounced “L”. I can see Felix growing up and being called “El” in high school.

      El Esplin kinda works, no?

    18. Kati says:

To echo your many, many fans, I also love the F-Bomb! How about the Felixir of life?

    19. Kathleen says:

He is adorable! I love the onesie too.

Maybe “Fix”, sort of short for a Felix Fix. :)

    20. Marisa says:

Love the onesie! Love “Fella.” Or “Jolly”? (He’s a jolly good fella.)

I turn 32 this week, and my dad still calls me Puddles. I assume this nickname originated during potty training. You just never know what’s going to stick. . .

    21. Kristol says:

Love the onsie!! this nickname is totally obscure and random… how about Oscar? You know, Felix & Oscar – The Odd Couple? Oh I don’t know… I know that’s silly. I’ll 43 next month and my Dad still calls me Krinkle. My oldest will be 4 this fall, and we’re STILL searching for a nickname that will stick. His name is Luke, like Felix, not something you can easily shorten. We started with Dude (because of a Bib his Daddy got him at an airport), then Skillet (one of my husbands favorite characters from Sanford and Son), then MudBug because he likes helping our neighbor in his garden – but, nontheless, none of them have stuck. My youngest however, whose name is Grey, has a nickname that has stuck oh too well. We call him Porkchop. This came about because he was SO much larger at birth then his older brother was. Funny though, the nickname is slowly turning into BeBop – this being because Luke initially couldn’t pronounce Porkchop. Anyway, that was A LOT of rambling. The “F”-Bomb is hilarious!!

    22. Julia says:

I think you should use F bomb into eternity. Few things have made me so happy today! Ben likes it, too. :)

    23. Ohh my goodness. Absolutely love the shirt. That made me laugh out loud!
      He is so presh.

    24. Erin says:

love the shirt! the best nicknames are the ones that my kids have given themselves or each other. Example: We thought Sutton was a nicknameless name too but once Sutton could talk but couldn’t pronounce her name she referred to herself as “Sutty” and it stuck. We also call her Sutts.

My kids add a “y” to the end of everyone’s name. Felix would probably be call Lixy at my house. Pretty bad, right?

      What does Penelope call him?

    25. Kari says:

That F bomb shirt is great. It makes me want to name my next boy with an F name just so I can have that shirt.

      Lix? Elixer?

    26. Brandy says:

My husband and I have three, kids that is, and about a million nicknames for all of them. IF we had a Felix (not likely in an Italian house, but whatever…) we might start like this:

      F, F-lix, Feffer, Mister x, FE-fi-fo, Mister F, the F Miester…you get it. Good luck!

    27. Rachel Larson says:

Haha! F-Bomb is so funny! I was thinking the whole time I was reading your post about Lex (fe-LIX). Sounds better than Lix, but still catchy?!

    28. Tamara says:

Such a cute onesie! Can’t help you on the baby boy nicknames. One requirement my hubby has is that our boy names are short and no nicknames. Good luck!

    29. Christine says:

Have you ever heard the song “Fee” by Phish? I’m not a huge Phish fan by any means, but my older brother was when I was about 6 years old. I loved the song then & still think it’s catchy today. It might change your opinions on “Fe”.

Here’s a link to a ridiculous Youtube video with the song: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k3EN4YS0OLg

    30. nikki says:

I like one of the other commenters idea of “Fix.” Sounds catchy.

You should just wait to see what he calls himself or what penelope calls him. My little sister Christina could never say her name when she was young, so she called herself “Nina” instead, and it completely stuck. She is now about to graduate college and everyone she knows calls her Nina. I can’t even imagine calling her Christina. It just turned into her name!

    31. Beth says:

Oh my lordie!! I LOVE F-bomb!!! That’s the cutest thing I’ve seen all day!

      What about “Flix” or “Flickers”

    32. Marie, Stockholm, Sweden says:

      How about Flex? :-)
And by the way, your blog is the second thing (first is my work e-mail) I look at in the morning when arriving to work. It is a must!
      Lots of sunny greetings!

    33. Hayley says:

I love Dos Equis-that is great. Flex is cute too. What about Fez? Kind of reminds me of That 70’s Show, but if I had a Feliz I’d probably go with Fez. I had/have a ton of nicknames, Hayley can come with a billion, but my mom calls me Lou, and my dad calls me Chip…so…who knows what Felix will be? :)

    34. Hayley says:

      ^^^…if I had a Felix*…but now that I wrote Feliz..how about calling him, ‘Feliz Navidad’ ?

    35. Anna says:

You’ll find something will evolve (or just pop out) and stick.

My little Emily’s nickname is chuckles – no idea why I started calling her that but she is 1.5 and now answers to it as well as her real name. I had an elderly woman tearily reminisce to me that her nickname was chuckles as a child when she heard me calling my daughter one day. I HATE the nickname ‘Em’ so have glared anyone who calls her that down. So far so good.

My little brother’s nickname for the last 20+ years or so has been ‘bum-brain’. He was teasing my little sister mercilessly one day when she was 4 years old and she was so frustrated she could barely speak and just managed to spit out ‘shut up bum-brain’ and so it stuck. We get some strange looks (and had a guy waiting at a bus stop with us one day in absolute stitches) when using his nickname, which he answers to without a thought now.

    36. shalini says:

He’s a cutie pie! I love Flex as an earlier commenter Marie has suggested.

    37. LeAnna says:

Lex maybe? That’s the first nickname that came to mind… LOVE the baby-branding :)

    38. Sabi says:

Frist of all, congratulations on your beautiful familly and awesome blog! I love the 3 last you mentioned, speacially F-bomb. I would also suggest Fex /becaus of FElix alEXander), but it’s not as cool as the others :)

    39. lindsay says:

My nephews name is Felix Alexander! He’s 8 years old now and gone through a LOT of nick names. When he was a tiny baby we would jokingly call him FiFi. It has morphed into Fefers or Fefus (his little sister had a hard time saying Felix and that is what is sounded like.)

    40. Polly Scott says:

Funny! These comments are cracking me up!!

    41. Emily says:

Call him baby, hehe I used to call Ayden that. But now I call him bubba… I don’t know where that came from tho… I like F BOMB, that’s hilarious!!!

    42. Marty K says:

How about Lick or Lickster, Lixter, or Lixie Dust, Lix Diddy? Good luck, hope you don’t really drop the F Bomb.

    43. Tang says:

I like Lex, as mentioned before. Kinda works for both Felix & Alexander! And Flex as well (as mentioned way up there too!). Flexy! :) Felee or fox?

    44. Libby says:

As the mother of a Levi and a Blair, I feel your pain. Neither has any real obvious nickname. And really, don’t you just feel like the nicknames will come? I’m sure you’ll gather some dandy ones (although f-bomb is hi-larious).

Anyway, once my wheels started turning, here’s what they busted out: Felix Felicis (potion for luck in Harry Potter), Fenix, Ironman (his initials F.E. are the abbreviation for iron-plus, I predict you could make an awesome periodic table-esque onesie along those lines!).

Yeah, I totally spent the last ten minutes staring at my computer trying to think of baby Felix nicknames. That’s pretty funny.

    45. CK says:

      Hahaha! Little Effy ;)

    46. nicole b. says:

I like F-Bomb or Lexie. xoxo.

    47. Anabel says:

I love the F-bomb idea. Super fun!
When I was in school, one of my classmates was also named Felix, but we all called him “Fichi” (fee-chee).

    48. Shaunie says:

I love the F-bomb idea as well! And the onesie is adorable!

I have a friend named Felix and we call him Kool Cat and Gato (spanish for cat)… as in Felix the cat from the comic strip/ cartoon). LOL

    49. Elaine says:

      Hahahaha, I love it. It’s a keeper.

    50. Melinda W. says:

Love all these ideas and the onesie is so adorable!! What about Rusty- in reference to the “Ironman” above. Or Xeno- using his X’s? Best wishes on finding just the right one.
P.S. Our daughter started calling her older brother Samuel, “Sammy” as soon as she could speak, funny how we didn’t ever call him that–and still don’t really. She’s now 5 and he’s 8 and her’s is the only “Th-Sammy” he answers immediately to. :) Your little Pen might have just the name for Mr. F Bomb
